Basketball and Life

The other day I saw a couple guys at the basketball court practicing only the half court shot. The half court shot is very exciting when it goes in. There have even been some games won by the infamous half court shot. But the odds are very low in consistently making the half courts shot.

What consistently wins basketball games? Is it the very exciting but very long odds of the half court shot? Or is it the basics of basketball including things like free throws and good defense? Right! The basics and fundamentals of the game of basketball win games!

Look at your life as it relates to basketball. Do you spend time on the exciting long shot and searching for that inconsistent but yet high energy? Or do you spend time on the basics in life doing the fundamentals day in day out as best you can?

In our life, we need to spend time and energy on doing the things that work and win rather than the long shots. It’s the practice of the little things and fundamentals in our life that make it great. Find the extraordinary in the ordinary! Practice the basics every day and perfect them. This is where the sweet spot in life is at. This is the good stuff and that deep soul level peace. Don’t go chasing for the artificial high of life’s long shots. Just work on the basics with passion and heart.

Think about the best NBA players. They do the little things right. They are great at the fundamentals; defense, free throws, passing, and positioning. Sure, they occasionally have a great dunk or some flash; but that is not what they work on consistently. They work on the basics! As I tell Teddy and Tate (at 3 years old and 3 months old, they look at me funny during my speeches but I still give them and with passion!), if you ever get to the NBA, you can stay there for years by being able to make free throws!

The fundamentals in life are where it’s at! This is the Master Targets we strive to hit including things like:

Parenting. No bigger responsibility in the world than being a good parent....
Spousal support and making marriages and relationships off the chain!
Helping others.....
Doing what you are called to do. Fulfilling your dreams...
Live simply and with focus....
Joyful and abundant. Living with a purpose and depth....
Love….just plain love.
