Create Today!

Great Leadership (and my formula) =

  • Vision : What exactly is the vision for your life and business? Is it big enough?
  • Goals: Set some targets based on your vision to make it come true
  • Creative and Innovation: Boring is out. Be interesting and entertaining!
  • Execution and a Do it Now Mindset: Take Action, Get on offense, Avoid Procrastinations
  • Focus: Use your time wisely...manage your time just like you do money...maximise your resources
  • Have Fun! : One shot at this life so we better have some fun

When I am not speaking, I make sure there is 50% or more of my time used to be CREATIVE and INNOVATIVE!

My Time Journal:

50% Creative ($200-$500 per hour)

30% Working On Business ($100-$200 per hour)

20% Tasks and Doing Stuff ($10-$50 per hour)

It's all relative...

^^^^ Bad Times and Bad Events are all relative ******

I remind myself of this powerful thought all the time.

Seriously.

I hate pity parties.
I hate lack of courage.
I hate feeling sorry for myself.
I hate fear.
I hate living in ordinary levels of consciousness (when levels of extraordinary consciousness are available to me...and for FREE).
I hate looking back.

You know what? It's not all about me. In my times of adversity, I need to remind myself that I am not the center of the universe. My tough times are not the most important thing on this planet. And besides that, it's all relative. I tell myself this all the time:

Somebody on this planet would trade my tough times for theirs in a FLASH!

Instead Chris, how about this:
  • Pick yourself up dude
  • Nobody really cares about your pity party and nobody wants to attend
  • Instead, Go out and make a difference
  • Keep on keeping on
  • It's Go Time
  • Embrace Adversity
  • It's all disguised as tough times but in the end it's really good for me
  • Relax...God in control and with me
  • Awesome!

DD + MM = WE!

Formula:

DD + MM = WE

Dramatically Different and then provide Magical Moments and you equal a WOW Experience!

1. Dramatically Different: What is your AHA in business? Why you? Why should people do business with you? What makes you unique?
  • VISION! You got to have a huge vision that is clear and motivating. If you aren't clear, how can you expect the marketplace to be clear? Vision separates the top from the rest; we see it every single day!
  • Do things different. Be unique. Take the road less traveled. Get uncomfortable.
  • Dream Big Time!

2. Magical Moments: Do the things that make it an experience! Do the little things extremely well from your heart!

  • Take the ordinary and make them extraordinary!
  • Focus on perfecting the BASICS (do the basics better than your competition)
  • Be Intentional (greatness doesn't happen by stumbling across it but rather by being intentional)
  • When you do this little things from the heart, you will be alone because your competition won't do it..Why? It's just too hard for them.

3. WOW Experience!: Business that has the "IT" factor full of energy, spirit, high performance, and passion. Something that can't be copied or duplicated. WOW!

When you are going to start?

Activities vs Achievement

Activities vs Achievement

Huge Difference!

A great exercise: Look over your calendar for the last couple weeks and audit your time. What did you see? More activities and noise or actual steps forward and achievements?

I think in today's world there is a wrong test for success. It seems like the gauge for success in today's world is how busy you are rather than how much you achieve. I see it all over.

Busy here and Busy there. Running around a million miles per hour with hair on fire; But short on achievements.

I am just the opposite. I want to slow down and take my time (especially with my decisions because most of them stay with me a long, long time.) I want to do less busyness and more business. I want to get rid of all noise and focus on taking steps forward. I hate distractions and busy bee non-sense that keeps me from getting the most impacting rewards accomplished.

But to get this done, I have to audit my performance and know exactly where my time goes. Why? I am where my time goes. Period.

What if....part II

What would our businesses look like if we:

  • Found our passion and big aha difference maker
  • Cast a clear and motivating vision
  • Get great people on board
  • Execute the BASICS better than our competition (especially focusing on relationships!)
  • Take little steps forward each day with passion and enthusiasm
  • Have a bunch o FUN!

Today, we are making business/life much harder than it needs to be.

Let's just take a time-out and really think on this.

If any of this hits home, you need to sign up for IGNITE Seminar we are hosting. Email kelly@christapken.com for details (limited space and seats are filling up fast). You don't want to miss out on this day long seminar where we are building a plan of action for an amazing 2010! Enough mediocrity...there's a better way and it will start with you being at IGNITE course!

KISS...Part III

KISS

Keep it Simple Silly!

We all are making business too difficult today! The top producers keep things very simple and focus on the BASICS!

It's all about the execution of the Basics:

  • Do Basics Daily!
  • Add a sprinkle of Passion!

Execute the basics every single day with a dose of passion and you have a formula that your competition can't match!

Apple, Google, and YOU! Keep things simple! (just like Apple and Google!)

Courage and some thoughts

Courage!...What does it mean? Something I have really been thinking about and working on.

It takes courage to live the life you want to live. This is for sure.

Another point about courage: Embrace adversity and tough times all the while understanding there will be ultimate victory. That's easy to say but hard work.

Really, I should look forward to adversity? Yes. Because it's in these tough times that we really grow. We dramatically improve when the weather is not so fair. We absolutely learn when the road is rough. We advance when the footing is not so sure. Now, please also understand that it's not fun and easy in these turbulent times. Nobody enjoys getting beat up. But it's needed and good for us.

Lastly, we need to keep our eyes on the prize which is in the end, WE WIN! We all will get through these tough times and come out even better. Defeat ..never. Victory is ours.

I think that's courage.

Question submitted

Question from our website: What is one of the biggest factors in today's marketplace that you are seeing?

And please feel free to post questions to our website and we will answer them.

Answer: The company's and top producers that are able to SEPARATE themselves in the marketplace is the biggest issue we are seeing today. There is so much Same ol' Same ol' out there with everyone running around a million miles per hour with their hair on fire....but can't separate themselves in the market.

And then there are the very few that Slow Down and Intentionality master the Vision and the message. Those that make themselves Different...not only different but DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT (DD) are the ones that even in today's chaos, go out and set records.

VISION...and communicating that vision in a clear and motivating manner is the BIGGEST separator in the marketplace.

Uncomfortable

Get uncomfortable!

We have a saying in our home and in our business:

**** Comfortably Uncomfortable! ****We want to be comfortably uncomfortable.

I firmly believe a huge reason why people settle for mediocrity and far less than their best is because they won't get out of their comfort zones. In fact, I am seeing his issue run rampant today more than ever. Think about this: Take an apple. Where is that delicious juicy red apple located? By the safe big trunk of the tree? Or out on the skinny branches?

I think we need to get out on the skinny branches and INTENTIONALLY get uncomfortable! I think we can take a lesson from Simon Cowell and American Idol. The American Idol contestants that "play it safe" by singing a predictable song get the wrath from Simon and kicked off. Well, same is true for us...No need to play it safe and do the same thing over and over all the while clinging to our comfort zones. That way of life just doesn't produce amazing results! In fact, it is a sure formula for medium living.

I have been accused to get out on the edge a little too much but nonetheless, I try to get uncomfortable! It's well worth the risk!

Washington DC

Washington DC for most of this week. 3 speeches in 2 days. DC is simply amazing!

Coming back to Austin...also AMAZING!

We are practicing what we preach in our seminars:
  • WOW Experience is the standard (being good is just not good enough anymore...have to be excellent!)
  • ROIR...Return on Investment Relationally! It's all about relationships!
  • Meet more people...I have 40 plus business cards in my pocket from great relationships I met this week. Question: What would your business look like if you just met one person each day?
  • Be Different. Different sells. (not better)
  • Lots of business out there....but the question is are you getting it?
  • Have Fun! if you can't have fun, do something else.
  • Pay Attention...

LOVE SOUTHWEST! Just study what they do and follow...(don't charge you for bags...no wonder they dominate!)

Pay Attention! Part 3

Great advice from one of my mentors today:

*** Remember to Pay Attention! ****

So true... what would things look like if we all just paid attention?

  • New Business
  • Amazing Relationships
  • Maximize Time
  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Fun and exciting
  • Stable and calm
  • Boundless Opportunities

I have to do a much better job of paying attention!

Crisis

The above graph is an example of the type of results a business will experience when operating under Crisis! The same life results can be expected in a life of crisis as well.

You just can't perform under crisis (long term)

So if you are experiencing crisis right now, you have to fix it! And this means change. It also means spending money to get some help. It's hard and tough work. I see too many out there that are hoping the crisis goes away and ignoring it. That is the wrong approach. Tackle crisis head on....start today.

"But I can't afford Chris."

You can't afford NOT to do it is my reply.

In the marketplace and In life....

When the lights turn on and the game plays out there are only two types:

  • Non-Performers
  • Performers

Be honest with yourself...Which one are you?

Enough talk: Take Action!

Notes from this weekend

I spend a ton of time on this one word: Why? But I am finding out that this really not my job to be consumed with Why? By nature, I am curious. I am type A. I want control. So I constantly asking and questioning... Why?

Well, I am learning (the hard way but healthy) that Why is not for me to figure out. As a Christ follower, I am getting a heavy needed slap upside my head on the words "complete submission". My son Teddy is very curious and an expert question asker. The boy rattles off more questions in a day than should be allowed by law. And sometimes I get frustrated by all the Whys...Well, I do the same thing.

Why did this happen? Why am I going through this? Why can't I get that? Why should this take this long? Why isn't my plan the best? Why do I have to? Why Why Why....Stop it Chris! That's not your job and role.
Below are examples of points I have now grasped:
  • It's not my plan is that perfect...in fact my plan is full of flaws
  • It's not my role to figure out Why?
  • It's not my job to question everything.
  • It's not good for me to control.
  • I have a limited perspective and simply can't see the whole picture

The lessons I have learned are tough; they sting! Here is the list from my notes on this process:

  • Put ego on the shelf. I am not that smart
  • Your plan won't work and is flawed
  • You have a very limited lens of which you can see the big picture...like looking at the state of Texas through a straw
  • Trust God. Always.
  • Faith can't be just some great word to be loosely thrown around. Chris you better really understand and work on this word Faith.
  • Being comfortable is not the goal. Being comfortable can't be the focus. Making a difference is the goal. And you can't be comfortable all the time and make a huge difference. That formula doesn't work.

You have a front row seat to this work in progress....terribly messy but real.

7 reasons people settle for medocrity

We have a major problem that we see all over the place: Settling for Mediocrity!

  • Mediocrity in business
  • Mediocrity is relationships
  • Mediocrity in income
  • Mediocrity in life plans
  • Mediocrity in school
  • Mediocrity in careers

We can do better. We need to do better. We were not made to settle for mediocrity.

Here are 7 reasons why people are settling:

  1. Lack of a clear vision
  2. Lack of goals setting
  3. Lack of effective partnering
  4. Lack of resources and poor time management
  5. Lack of handling adversity correctly
  6. Lack of work ethic
  7. Lack of sustainable passion

Take each one of these and work on them individually. Spend the time and effort on each one and the payoff will be huge!

Adversity...

One of the things all of us are guaranteed in this life is adversity. The degrees of adversity is different for all us...but we all will experience adversity.

*** But with every ounce of adversity comes an equal if not increase in assets!

It's hard to embrace adversity and enjoy tough times but in reality, we should. Why? Because behind it and disguised is an amazing asset. You may be going through really tough times right now; many are experiencing just that at this moment. But please understand, better days are ahead and you have a ton of assets coming your way!

We talk to many struggling people in the marketplace on a daily basis. It's tough out there right now. But all of this adversity we are experiencing is making us better. Behind the tough times curtain, is a wonderful treasure full of assets.
  • Embrace Adversity
  • Look for the assets
  • Learn from tough times; get better even went it stinks
  • Keep positive
  • Stay focused

Stand out

If there is nothing special about your work, then there will nothing special about your pay either.

Stand out...
Be Different
Be Unique
Take Road Less Traveled
Try it
Innovative and Creative
Be Interesting
Be Entertaining

3 questions we must be able to answer in a clear, compelling, and motivating manner:
  1. What do you do?
  2. What makes you unique?
  3. Why should I do business with you?

Come on now! Let's get going on separating ourselves in the marketplace by being different! Boring stinks. Boring is out.

  • Today is the time to stand out from the pack and make a huge splash!
  • There is big $$ out there for those who are different
  • Inspire me as your customer
  • I crave interesting and entertaining as your customer....give it to me!

Power

I have been traveling and speaking all week and getting to meet a ton of people. (Houston to Dallas to Austin.)

One reminder that really stood out to me this week is the Power of Attitude (both good and bad). Those people who have positive attitudes have a Positive Power about them. It's infectious, contagious, and so attractive! Unfortunately the opposite is also true. Those with negative attitudes seems to have a Negative Power hovering over them and dragging them down.

We all know attitude is huge. But this week, we have had a first row seat in seeing the incredible POWER of attitude.

Tap into the Positive Power of Attitude! It's huge....

Do you have a plan, a system, and time scheduled to Intentionally work on your attitude each and every day? Or do you use the Hope Plan? You know the hope plan...I hope my attitude is good...I hope there is some time to work on myself...I hope my attitude is good. News Alert: The Hope plan never works.

Instead of the Hope Plan, just be Intentional! Intentional plan, system, and time to work on your attitude! The result is the incredible Power of Positive!

Limited thing called TIME

Time goes by fast! Think about it:
  • How fast did yesterday go by?
  • How fast did last week go by?
  • How fast did your kids grow up?
  • How fast did did your summer go by?
  • How fast did your last birthday go by?

Time flys by...so we better think about our time and what we are doing with it.

Question to think about and plan for both business and personally:

**** So what am I really doing with this limited thing called TIME?

Now just don't read this and move on....spend some of your precious time working on how you really spend your time.

Should you have a coach?

In a moment of transparency, I am a complete sports nut and even more specific, football junkie. As my wife says: This is your hunting season. As this time of the year is gearing up and football is just around the corner, I study the success of professional athletes. One thing they all have in common is they have coaches. Tom Brady credits his coaches for his success. Tiger Woods has a coach. Kobe Bryant has coaches to continue to elevate his game.

All athletes have coaches. But why don't small business have coaches? Something to consider.

At his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Nolan Ryan said: "While I was with the Rangers, I was very fortunate to have a pitching coach by the name of Tom House...He would always come up with new training techniques that we would try and see how they would work in to my routine. Because of our friendship and Tom pushing me, I think I got in the best shape of my life during the years that I was with the Rangers."

Nolan Ryan's records include
Most lifetime strikeouts (5714)
Most career no-hitters (7)
Most season strikeouts (383, AL 1973)
Fastest recorded pitch (101.9 mph, Guiness Book Of World Records)

In our own business, we have coaches. I don't know what I would do without those special people pushing me, encouraging me, holding me accountable, giving me new ideas, giving me perspective, and most of all being there for me.

If you need a coach, you need to call us today.

Learn More...

We bring a sense of objectiveness to most small businesses as well as top producing individuals that is rather unique. In our line of work, we get a front row seat to the a ton of variety in the marketplace and the people that work in it. Most people only get a limited view because they stay in the same industry and run in the same circles. (kind of like looking at Texas through a straw...not much perspective)

Our latest conclusion and finding based on our data and quantified work:

  • ****** The top businesses and top producing individuals are successful not because of what they know, but rather, their deep thirst to know more. ****

It's not what you know...it's your passion to learn more that is the barometer for success.

Please consider and think about:

  • When is the last time you really focused on learning something new?
  • When is the last time you signed up for a seminar to learn? (good news, we are having several coming up on some amazing topics)
  • Do you intentionally schedule time to learn and improve?
  • Do you teach your people to learn?
  • Does the culture of your organization embrace and encourage learning? If so, prove it..
  • When was the last time you implemented something new?
  • When was the last time you really got creative?

$$$$ Don't spend precious time and energy in ruts and routines on what you know...but rather learn new stuff continually.

Slow Down

Just Relax! (was the message to myself today)

*** Sometimes I get in a hurry...and nothing good happens when I rush. Isn't this true, that every time we rush, we can expect bad results? The world has really picked up the pace but I am working on going in the opposite direction which is to intentionally slow down. My data and previous results clearly point out that every time I rush, I can expect terrible results. The opposite is also true in black and white...every time I slow down, I get good results. Hmmm.

Some other thoughts:

  • Crisp pace is a goal...but never rush. Love the word crisp!
  • Enjoy the moment (even when the current moments are tough)
  • Live in the NOW
  • My favorite question: ^^^ Chris, What's next? ^^^Keep moving forward. Keep taking steps. Keep going. Keep fresh. Keep creative. Keep innovative. Keep positive. But all of it done slowly and intentionally.
  • When you love what you do, it's impossible to ever leave your work: See Brett Farve!
  • Reducing technology....getting rid of the noise
  • Never see a dentist who has bad teeth.

Slow down = good results.

Imagine

What's the last really innovative idea you put into play for your business/organization?
  • Innovation
  • Creativity
  • Outside the box thinking
  • New
  • Exciting
  • A Jolt
  • Fresh
  • Chic
  • Unique
  • Trail blazer
  • Funky
  • Edge
  • Go it going on...

Won't that be cool if those words were used by your customers to describe you?

What not to do...

I have always said a To-Don't Do List will make more money than a To-Do List. The problem is that nearly everyone has a To -Do List but very few have the To-Don't Do List.

Same is true by paying attention on what NOT to do in business. Let me share some examples of things I have witnessed in the marketplace recently for you to think about:

  • Cutting employee training programs....not investing in employees
  • Really poor attitudes....doom and gloom vibe
  • Not having any fun....falling out of love with their business
  • Lack of production...not working
  • Scattered focus....searching for short-cuts
  • Lack of details....sloppy business details
  • Pulling marketing...no growth plans and no innovation

What about if we just do the opposite? I'm in!....

Dress for Success

I see a serious lack in details in the marketplace. Specifically, sloppy dress.

Some things to think about:

  • What type of image are you trying to project?
  • Does your dress reflect that image?
  • Are you intentional about your dress?
  • Do you put out the effort?

Look, I am not a suit and tie dude...in fact living in Austin TX, you can't be! In Austin, most wear shorts and flip flops and it's the reverse here...suits and ties are basically outlawed in Austin. But you can still look sharp and professional without a suit and tie.

Pay Attention to your dress and make it consistent with your image.

Dress for success is even more true today. It matters.

Bottom Up!

Bottom Up!

Most businesses focus on the best months. They subscribe to the "have to make hay when sun shines" type thinking. All the energy and focus goes on the best months. And that is a ton of pressure.

But I think there is a better way: Bottom Up! If you take the bad months and make them average months, what did that do to entire year? Of course, went up!

It's much less pressure to make a bad month into an average month than keeping having to hit home runs in great months.

Try it. Work from Bottom Up!
  • Take Bad months and make them average
  • Take Average months and make them great
  • Take Great months and keep them great

Result: An amazing year!

Finish Strong!

#### Finish Strong !

It's all about the Finish!...in life, business, purpose, ....the key to success is how we finish.

148 days left this year. Given this, how are you going to finish? What exactly are you going to do? What difference are you going to make? What risks are you willing to take?

Something to think about....

Waste

I am doing of review and audit using the word WASTE as the center-point.

Waste for me:
  • Time (and this is a disaster and makes no sense....a complete tragedy)
  • Focus (at times doing the wrong things)
  • Opportunities (not properly paying attention)
  • Effort (not doing my best every single time)
  • Relationally (not doing my job to grow each and every relationship...taking relational issues for granted at times...)
  • Impact (letting a moment slip by without making a huge difference or potential difference)

I hate waste. I want to correct this and now the work starts...

Love what you do...from a 4 year old

Conversation with my four year old son Teddy:

Teddy: Dad, are you going to give a speech today?

Me: Yes

Teddy: Why do you go give speeches?

Me: Because I love it

Teddy: We should do things we love

Me: Brilliant

Self Management

As an entrepreneur and sole business owner, I have to manage myself. If I don't, disasters happen. Real life disasters that are not any fun. So self management is not just a fun and fancy concept...it's no joke....but rather a essential issue.

I have improved over the years. But I have a long way to go in mastering self leadership and management. I work at it daily.

Some concepts I have learned, mostly the hard way, that you can think about (and may help you)
  • Vision is critical
  • Time is treated like money and an investment issue (focus)
  • Play to strengths and minimize weaknesses....Get a "THEY" ..aka partners...to help. Example: If you don't like selling, you must hire a salesperson. Period. "Yeah Chris, but I can't afford it." You can't afford NOT to do it...Salespeople maybe cost you money and expensive but not near as expensive as bankruptcy
  • Be Accountable
  • Work..yes work. There are no short-cuts
  • Have some fun and relax. I am not perfect and will make mistakes. It's OK...not going to ever be perfect so I try to give myself that break

The Secret is this:

$$$$ THERE IS NO SECRET!

It's a process..and it's hard work...but very fun! (or it should be)

Focus and choice

My written thoughts in my journal today:

**** Question: What decisions should you focus on today?

### Answer: Only the ones which you can directly control.

This included:

  • Schedule and Planning...I can control what my calendar looks like
  • Time Management....I can control how I spend my time (media/TV did not make the list)
  • Attitude...I can control my attitude...it's hard sometimes but only I can determine
  • Knowledge and Learning....I can learn something today
  • Serving...I can serve others today

Things that did not make the list:

  • Budgets...I can't control companies budgets for my services
  • Other People...I can only control me
  • Economy
  • Proposals...I can't make final decisions on outstanding proposals we have out there
  • Time Wasters (Don't Facebook, Don't Twitter, Don't Social...Don't do TV)

I view focus like as an investment issue because we only have a limited supply of it...so I treat it just like any other investments. The game plan with any investment issue is to get the highest r.o.i.

With my focus, what gets me the highest r.o.i.? That's where my attention needs to be and not on the other "noise" that is really meaningless.

Behavior in Tough Times

The one thing you and I are promised in this life is hard times.

But why are we so shocked when it knocks on our door?

Like everyone else, I have my adversity...but here is what I have learned (and sometimes the hard way)

  • *** It's not the adversity that matters....it's our behavior in times of adversity that really counts!

^^^^ How do you behave in times of adversity? You maybe going through a storm right now...it's ok! What counts is how you are behaving in this storm.

Plan Do Review

It is so easy to lose focus. I am really working on this issue.

It's so critical.

We only have so much time when we are FULLY engaged and focused. In that time where we are in the sweet spot of focus, we must make sure we are doing the best activities!

Focus

Best ROI on this time ($$)

Audit to make sure the results are there

Time Wasters...

Time Wasters and Ineffectiveness with Time

One of the key factors to success is great time management. Those that can do more production, more meaningful production, with the greatest efficiency carry a monster competitive advantage in the marketplace.

We all have a To-Do list and that is valuable, no question about it. However, hardly anyone has a To-Don’t Do list…and this To-Don’t Do list can produce tremendous results.

Goal: To avoid waste and activities which don’t produce good results.

Question and Action:

• What are my activities which don’t contribute to positive results?

• What I am going to do to stop doing those ineffective activities?

I know this is true...

If you do outstanding work, you will continue to get great work...I don't care what the economy is doing.

Great performers always have work! Period.

This is true in every industry.

But here is the million dollar question for you:
  • Is your work outstanding...is your work a WOW Experience?
  • If not, what are you going to do today to make it outstanding and a WOW Experience?

Remember: If you want so much business that you can't handle it all, just be outstanding!

Be a Pro!

Be a Pro!

You are paid for the value of which you bring to a company, organization, community, or marketplace.

The more value you bring, the more pay.

But what really dictates your status (income, title, value) is the level of expertise you bring in your chosen profession in the your ability to the movement of good or services.

So be a Pro....
  • Market like a Pro
  • Sell like a Pro (everyone sells something...for profit, non for profit, government...we all have customers)
  • Act and behave like a Pro
  • Execute like a Pro
  • Prepare like a Pro
  • Hustle like a Pro
  • Network like a Pro
  • Time Management like a Pro

Pro's get paid very well...they bring huge value to their field.

Remember: If there is nothing special about your work, there is also nothing special about your pay! Be dramatically different. Be Distinct. Be a Pro! There is nothing worse than being ordinary. You and I were not put on this planet to be just ordinary.

Let's be a WOW Experience!

Half way point!

BUZZZZZZ....FIRST HALF IS OVER....Half way point! ....50% of the year 2009 is in the books....

After the first half of the year; here are some things to think about:

  • Are you satisfied with your results? If not, why not?
  • Did you hit your budget and objectives? If not, why not?
  • Did you spend the first half on doing things that make you money?
  • Did your cash flow improve over last six months?
  • Did your production improve over last six months?
  • Did you use your first half of the year time wisely?
  • Did you do something innovative and creative over last six months?
  • Did you invest intentionally in your people over the first half?

If you don't like your answers, that's ok...we have a whole second half left. Time to make some changes is NOW...It's GO TIME!

Make the second half amazing...It starts today. Make everyday count and make everyday a MASTERPIECE!

As my Grandpa would say: Time to get the lead out of my a** and start RUNNING FAST!

Offense...Big $$

Stop reacting and Start responding!

We can only play defense in this time of chaos for so long. Now is the time for Action! And think about this: Who gets the big money....defensive guys?... or offense guys that want the ball in their hands and are not afraid to shoot? Would you want to go to a game where nobody shot the ball and all the players did was run up and down the court only playing defense? Me neither...Not very interesting or entertaining (which is where the big $$ is at) But that's what is happening in real life marketplace today...everyone playing defense (cuts, wait, expenses, hold off) and only a few are playing offense (revenues, growth, Go Time, Do it Now mindset)

Offense; not Defense...

  • Get mad and do something about it!
  • Take action today
  • Revenues is the focus; not cutting expenses all the time
  • Start today (Do it now Mindset)
  • Be Accountable
  • Be interesting and entertaining

Be Pro-Active; Stop being Re-Active

Make it Happen....Start today.

Exercise

Exercise: (please write down on paper or on computer)

What 3 things are you not doing in your business that you should?

  • For each one, write down why you are doing them and what is the plan to correct this and start executing.

Let me know the results. Have a great weekend.

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Answer these....

Make sure you can answer these 3 questions with passion and absolute clarity:

1. What do you do?

2. What makes you unique?

3. Why should I do business with you?

If you can't answer these questions, you can't effectively position yourself in the marketplace. Period. Plus everything else breakdown too...employee turnover, production, branding, advertising, referrals,...on and on.

For example: What employee wants to work and sacrifice for a organization that can't answer the above with passion? You are correct...None! And when you can 't attract great talent, what kind of company do you really have? Who wants to work for a company that is stale? Those type of employees that you can get to work for a stale company will leave at the drop of a hat...turnover cost anyone? See the slippery slope...

Note: With passion! and clarity....that's the key!

Email me the progress...

Boring is Out!

Boring is Out!

Given this, why are so many businesses and so many in the marketplace boring?

Last week we hammered this to a bunch of folks in the real estate industry. Most Realtors all do the same things, act the same ways, market the same old tired ideas, and behave in the same stale ways....same, same, same! And that is flat out boring.

Nobody wants to do business with boring.

Do you want your employees and customers to describe your company/organization:
  • Ok
  • Not too bad
  • Predictable
  • Boring
  • Stale
  • Not exciting
  • Just going thought the motions

Or is there a better way?

  • Exciting
  • Fun
  • Engaging
  • Edgy
  • Relational
  • Purposeful
  • Intentional
  • Crisp
  • Innovative
  • Creative
That's what I thought. Me too...so what are you waiting for...The 2 key words for success:

INTERESTING
+
Entertaining
How can you make your company interesting and entertaining today? When you do, you become relevant and wanted....and wouldn't that be nice?

Friday's Time

You can tell more about people by looking at their time than their money.

We can all make more money. But none of us can make more time!

Time: Most precious resource on the planet. But why do so many people waste it? To me, this is mind-blowing nonsense.

With your time:
  • Protect it
  • Invest it wisely
  • Love it
  • Manage it (just like if not better than your money)Bold
  • Audit it (make sure you are working on most productive things and priorities first)
  • Relationships with Time FIRST!

Today ask and audit: What did I really get done this week? No B.S...really examine; really truthful; really now...(what did I really get done this week?)

Stop Copy Cat

Please Please Please: No more copy cat!

I see so much imitation and copying each other in today's marketplace. For profit...Non For Profits; it doesn't matter....everyone is copying each other.

That's not what sells
That's not what motivates employees
That's not what moves people and calls for action
That's not what is contagious
That's not what is business is about

Stop it today

Instead:
  • Set the agenda (let other copy you!)
  • Trail blaze
  • Be interesting and entertaining...
  • Be original
  • Take road less traveled
  • DD = Be DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT!
  • Innovation
  • Outside of the box thinking...Outside of the box execution
  • Avoid Ruts and Routines
  • Do One Thing Everyday that Scares You!....Elonore Roosevelt

A First...

Just when you thought you have seen everything....BAM! Being a business consultant and speaker, I have witnessed thousands of companies. I have had a front row seat to the good, bad, and ugly in the marketplace. But last night, another first in the business world came in front of me.

I found the first private for-profit company that did not take cash! A hotel non-the-less.....a bar in a hotel. WOW! is all I have to say...

This hotel has mastered "How To Make Doing Business With Us Difficult"...

I went to the outside bar of the hotel attached to the hotel and ordered...I then pulled out cash and was told that they didn't accept cash; only tokens that you have to buy from them. What? So then they direct me to stand in a line that is 30 mins long to buy tokens. Oh Ok...yeah right...so they want me to leave my son in the pool by himself while I go and wait in line for tokens to buy a drink? All the while I have cash and want to give it to them right now!

Also, the lady next to me ordered and wanted to charge her room. She was told that room charges and cash are not acceptable. Only tokens. Unbelievable!

The talk at the hotel was not about the great property or great event, but rather how stupid this company was for not accepting cash. I heard so much negativity about this crazy policy. In today's chaos, things are hard enough without stupid policy.

  • Are there policies that you should change in your organization?
  • Have you asked your customers if there are things you do to Make Business Difficult?
  • Have you asked your employees if there are things you do to Make Business Difficult?
  • Before implementing new policy, do you seek objectiveness and outside opinions?
  • Do you have policies which make it difficult to do business with you?

Email for the name of the only bar that does not accept cash and you too can experience this first.

Branding

Forty-Eight hours ago my laptop crashed. Bam...in a flash, I was knocked out of commission. Total right hook and I was TKO. Talk about a train wreck. You hear about this stuff and dismiss it but when you go through it, your perception changes. That "back-up" issue becomes a real deal.

Speaking of perception, we are semi-overhauling our marketing campaigns. The perception of our marketing was not strong enough. So we are changing....have to. want to; live to. The following are some push ups we did with our branding and marketing.

Marketing and Branding!
  • Where are you at with all of this?
  • Do you have a plan?
  • Do you have a strategy?
  • Are you executing in marketing and branding every single day?
  • Is your marketing and branding consistent with your vision?
  • Consistency is the key
  • Have you asked "others" i.e. customers, clients, vendors, employees about your marketing and branding?
  • Are you teamed up with the right people in branding and marketing?
  • Are you thinking outside the box?
  • ARE YOU INTERESTING AND ENTERTAINING in your branding and marketing? If not, you can expect average results. The only way to get BIG $$ is to be a Pro...right? Well, all Pro's are interesting and entertaining.

It's all about BRAND YOU!

Think on this today....plan on this today. A great roi for your time is on BRAND YOU!

Two...

In today's chaos in the marketplace, we all have to do things differently.

As this song as, it takes two when it used take only one.

Today:

Double the work
Doube the innovation
Double the purpose
Double the love
Double the excellence
Double the WOW!

Kobe

Heading back to the ATX...

I was watching the Lakers vs Magic last night and amazed by the intensity of Kobe Bryant. I then thought:

1. What would my business look like with Kobe Bryant intensity?
2. What would my life look like with Kobe Bryant intensity?

Relationships

I am in Dallas all week. One of the most important lessons that continually slaps me right in the face is relationships. There is nothing more important than RELATIONSHIPS!

I continually see the common element of great producers: they all have great relationships.

A couple of quick tips and something to think about:
  • Do you seek out new great relationships?
  • Do you work at growing and inspiring your existing relationships? (For younger folks: Relationships take work! Yes you have to work at them....constantly)
  • Do you schedule time on your calendar for intentionally relationship building?
  • Do you use networking to find and grow great relationships?

Relationships!...nothing more important than relationships. Period.

3 questions

Three Questions to consider:

1. What does "real" positive change look like?

  • Get out the pen and paper and work on this...it needs to be defined and written out. We all have to change to improve. Start today.

2. What are you doing to implement this real change?

  • Do you have changes scheduled and planned? Execution is the key from players vs fakers!

3. What are you going to do to market this change to your audience?

  • Nothing like a well thought out and executed marketing plan.

Thanks Tate!

We have experienced the same business frustrations as most....events cancelled last minute, people over-promising, late or no payments; on and on. We are no different other than the fact we plan on this stuff happening because we constantly work ON our business and not just in it. Huge difference. When you work ON your business, you can make effective changes and make them quickly with confidence.

But last night as I was having moments of Stinkin' Thinkin' when my son Tate (above) crawled on my lap and put his head on my chest. We watched the basketball game and he fell asleep. Man...God has the best MMM ever...Mini Moments Matter! Just the absolute perfect prescription...all life's problems seemed really insignificant to that moment.

  • Mimi Moments Matter...MMM
  • Pay Attention...You miss them when you don't live in the now and pay attention to the present moments
  • Work ON and not just in...
  • Don't ever give up...
  • Is that a cute kid or what!
Thank you son! Your Dad needed that...

Comfortably Uncomfortable

I hate ruts and routines; seriously drives me nuts. There is absolutely no reason to go through life doing the same things over and over again. How boring; How stale; How predictable; How sad.

We have a saying in our house that we want to be comfortably uncomfortable. I do a good job of mixing things up!

Currently:
  • New business programs..Monthly Real Estate program is going to be unbelievable!
  • New speeches! Why people settle for mediocrity...
  • New relationships
  • New networking
  • New boundless possibilities and opportunities
  • New food...everything I make is terrible! I need some work on cooking...most of the things I make is downright inedible
  • New grass in our backyard....yes! I put new grass in and it's actually growing...I know; I can't believe it either
  • New marketing
  • New summer activities...see ya later TV
  • New books...just bought two more last week
  • New business! No need to settle when more business is out there in a monster way

Trying NEW things constantly...how about you? Have you thought about it? Have you made it intentional?

Procrastination...Defeat it.

The major enemy of so many businesses and people today: Procrastination!

It's amazing how deep procrastination runs in today's world. I see it all over. I also participate in it myself. I am not a PH.D on it but certainly guilty of it. But I am working on it.

How many diets ever start on a Friday? None. Every diet in the world starts on Monday. And then when Monday comes, we just don't feel perfect so we move it to the next Monday. When that comes, we tell ourselves that after all, we are only a few days from New Years and that is the perfect time. I will start the diet on New Years. That comes and we push it back to the next Monday. So on and so forth.

Join me in working on the defeat of procrastination. My first step was getting mad about it. I am furious with myself and going to do something about it.

Look for our new program in a day or two. It's awesome! The goal: Give business owners some new objectivity. We all need objectivity and now, for a reasonable cost, we are offering some objectivity.

Targets

If you aim at nothing, you will hit it everytime!

Question:
  • What are you aiming at today?
  • Are your goals crystal clear?
  • Do you have passion for your goals?
  • Have you asked Why you are doing the things you do?
  • Does your vision have purpose?
  • Do you FALL IN LOVE with your vision and goals?

The number one problem I see in today's marketplace is a lack of vision! You need to have a vision that is clear and detailed....then a road map as to where you are going....then tasks to make sure you are accomplishing things to make the vision come true.

All this is so easy to say....but have you really worked on it....have you really accomplished it?

Training

Train your People! ....and train yourself. Improve every single day.

** Today!**

$$ It's the best money you can spend $$

-It's what your employees want
-Excellence only
-Start today
-Come on now...don't procrsainate any longer
-Those that win have the best employees
-Do you have a turnover report and do you know your True Turnover costs? It's scary.
-End turnover by a implementing a great training program

Question: Today, what did you learn? Today, what did your employees learn?

If blank = not good.
We can do better.

Is your boat leaking?

Is your business boat leaking? If so, keep reading:

Statistics tell us the average salesperson has a closing percentage of about 22% of all the opportunities. So for every ten chances, two are being closed and eight walk. What a shame.

When asked, most business owners believe the average salesperson closes about 50%. That is a 28% mistake!

You can substantially increase your sales by closing one of those eight that walk! That seems do-able don't you agree? We all can do this by a little bitty more:
  • Focus...simple focus ten percent more each day.
  • Time Management...thirty minutes each day of less email, Internet, or gossiping as examples. We can all do that!
  • Pay Attention
  • Be Intentional....Track the numbers! What you don't measure you can't manage!
  • Training! Learn more! Improve your Skills just a little bit make a huge difference on the income statement and bank account.

We can' t be super successful by only closing two of ten. We can do better than that!

And note...you will love this: We are talking about substantial revenue increases by closing one of the eight that walk....ALL THIS IS WITHOUT INCREASING ANY SELLING OPPORTUNITIES! All this is without spending any more money. It's just doing a bit better with what we already got!

Paint the Picture

Last night before bed, I was making up stories with my four year old son Teddy. The more detailed and graphic the story, the more Teddy liked it.

"Once upon a time there was a boy named Teddy. Teddy liked to play basketball."

Or

"Once upon a time not long ago, there was a very nice mannered, blond hair, extremely happy boy named Teddy Tapken. This smiley boy liked to spend every night with his Dad, jumping and laughing while they played basketball together."

You can see the difference....and so could Teddy. "Dad, tell me more of those stories with more words." We have all heard the saying: A picture is worth a thousand words.

To simulate others (employees, customers, the marketplace) we need to be able to use words that paint the picture of our vision!
  • Visualization
  • Simulation
  • Emotion
  • Feelings
  • Action

Do your employees know the picture of the future in words?

Does the marketplace understand your vision from marketing words and branding?

Can you impact others to take action by your picture words?

Do this: Paint the picture of your vision through words. Do you like it? Does it reflect the truth? Does it motivate you?

Bitter or Better

Question from website: Chris, I recently got laid off my 10 year job, what are some tools I can put into place to help my negative attitude?

First, I want to compliment the sender in recognizing the importance of attitude. The initial step is to diagnose the problem and objectively understand there is an issue here. Attitude is everything! Period. So working on our attitude is the best r.o.i. we can make.

On dealing with adversity, like losing a 1o year job, I strongly suggest a pro-active approach. Start with understanding that adversity is somethings we all experience. You and I are not alone in having tough times. Everyone goes through it. That doesn't mean it's fun or enjoyable but we often think: Why me?....Well, it's not just you or me; adversity happens to everyone. Next, adversity is placed in our life on purpose. It's not an accident. It's intentional. We are suppose to have speed bumps in our life. Last, look for the lessons in that reside in the rough roads. We learn by far more from our adversity than we do our good fortune. In our tough times, there are powerful learning lessons so make sure you grab them.

For me, I look at my adversity like this: Get Bitter or Get Better....I have to make the choice. I chose to get Better!

Can I get a witness?

Question from our website: Chris, our company does not treat employees very well. Do you have any advice I can pass along to change this negativity?

Thomas J. Watson, former IBM chairman, hit a grand slam with this: "I believe the real difference between success and failure in a corporation can very often be traced to the question of how well the organization brings out the great energies and talents of its people."

There is nothing, and I mean nothing, more important than relationships and people (employees are top of that list)

Now that you know this, my question back: What are you going to do about it?

Set the Tone!

Set the Tone!

One of the area's of my business and my life I am examining is the tone. It's been a great process to go through and very revealing. I think those that produce great results intentionally set the tone. Great leaders set the tone. And then great leaders examine the tone to make sure it is consistent with the purpose.

As I young man, I had the absolute privilege of working for a NFL team, the Miami Dolphins and working for the All-Time leader in wins for a coach in Hall of Fame Coach Don Shula. I learned so much from him and regard him as one of the best leaders I have ever known. One of the biggest lessons I learned from Coach Shula was on tone. Coach Shula set the tone...and it was crystal clear to not only players and other coaches, but to the entire organization! So clear in fact, that the fourteen year old ball boy got it! Tone is critical for success.

When I went through this, I found some area's where I was entirely too relaxed and others where I was entirely too rushed. All of this has allowed me to set a new more effective tone. Here are some of my notes:
  • Crisp is the goal
  • John Wooden and one of my favorite quotes on tone: "Quick but don't rush."
  • Smooth
  • Clean
  • Relational
  • Purposeful and Intentional
  • Sharp
  • Clear

Look at your tone. Examine. Be intentional.

Go Back to Your Vision!

In times of chaos and uncertainty, always revert back to your VISION!

It's your vision that gives you the passion and emotional fortitude to plow forward in these times of uncertainty.

VISION:
  • Your Purpose
  • Why? to everything...why are we doing this? why is this needed? why did we start this? why is this needed?
  • Intentionality! to everything
  • Pay Attention
  • Passion
  • Spirit...(nothing stronger than team spirit...do you have it?)
  • Guts

Go back to your vision today. It will be the best r.o.i. you can do. By the way, if you don't have a vision, you are missing the boat. Also, if you can't answer the quesitons with your vision, that should tell you something huge.

Friday, April 24, 2009

Why...

Starting with the vision and working down to everyday tasks, ask yourself why are you doing what you are doing. Force yourself to do the mental push-ups and completely answer this question in these many different areas.

This could dramatically change your world!

The key is to have very deep and profound WHY's! More to come on that....

But first, ask yourself the above question. If it's hard to answer, that tells you something very important and you should be able to clear out a ton of noise.

Identify Best Networking Opportunities

Networking is one of the most important skill sets to master. Those that are experts in networking have a huge competitive advantage in not only the marketplace, but also life as well.

Jesus was the best at networking to ever walk the planet. It came naturally to him. For others of us, we have to work at it and make networking very much intentional.

With that, network on purpose and with passion. A great exercise I do is the draw 3 circles on a page and inside each circle, identify key people or key organizations that could really make things awesome for you!

After that, we will write on how to make an intentional plan to grow, develop. or start those relationships.

But the first start is to identify!

Monday, April 20, 2009

Intentional Learning

What are you learning today?

Do this: Take 10 minutes today and write a list of things you are actively and intentionally learning...

So many of us fall into R and R....ruts and routines! Why do most people settle for mediocrity? Look around and you will see it all over:
  • Mediocrity in relationships
  • Mediocrity in marriages
  • Mediocrity in careers
  • Mediocrity in business
  • Mediocrity in daily work

We can change this. How? Learning new things. But the problem is most don't put intentionality to learning. Make a list of what you are intentionally learning today. Well worth your time. (by the way, if this is difficult to make that list....that tells you something!)

Talk is Cheap...

In today's marketplace chaos, one theme keeps coming back time and time again as we talk with so many people...Talk is Easy but Doing is not!

Here is what we see:
  • Today, we find very little action in the marketplace
  • Great intentions but no execution
  • Lots of theory but short on reality
  • So much Wait and almost no Go
  • Everyone is Aiming but Nobody if Firing away
  • All Defense (cuts, expenses) No Offense (adds, revenues)

It's time to change!

The best road, and the road that nobody is taking looks like this:

GO FOR IT TODAY!

MAKE IT HAPPEN TODAY!

ACTION! EXECUTION! GO TIME! Why Not? Increase Revenues... Get New Business
Sell Something to Somebody Today! (everything else is secondary) Let's change today!

Friday, April 10, 2009

Question submitted

Question submitted on my website: Chris, what issues or ideas are you working on in your business? I want to see if there is anything I can grab from you and put in my business.

  • More writing and articles. One of our key principles is Be Seen and Be Heard! In other words, we are working on branding and marketing through relevant articles.
  • New programs. We constantly aware that we need to be Interesting and Entertaining! And that means aggressively having new stuff to talk about. Look, how interesting and entertaining is Six Sigma in today's marketplace? Not very is right! I am not saying it doesn't work or not meaningful, in fact, it is....but it's 1990 type stuff. We are continually re-inventing our programs and speeches to stay relevant! We are either Distinct or we will be Extinct! So we are writing new seminars and speeches all the time.
  • Along those lines, we are looking for new ways to Change. What got us here won't get us there....the only way we can get to our "there" is to change! Plus, I hate ruts and routines. I want to be comfortably uncomfortable and never fall into the trap of comfort zones. I have a list of changes I want to consider and then implement. Example: Meet someone new every single day and ask how you can help them.
  • Outline for a book project.
  • Working on a weekend seminar...Business Retreat and Think-Tank....at a great resort in central Texas for business leaders and those in the marketplace to Transform their Business!
  • Pick up the pace on reading....there is so much to learn that can help me. I have to increase the number of pages I read per day.
  • Re-define Priorities with a focus on those that are deep impact (starting with the eternal.)
  • RELATIONSHIPS! ....make new ones and improve existing relationships with intentionality and purpose. To me, there is nothing more important than relationships on this planet (see most famous picture of earth taken November 10, 1967)
  • Finally, Superbowl weekend for Christians as Easter is here...Finally, I am working on improving my relationship with Jesus! See priorities above...Is there anything more important than that? Not for me! Have a great Easter to all!

Teddy and Tate Tapken

I am in Houston speaking at a convention for a couple days. Having a rockin' response to our message of Hope, Action, Execution, and Attitude in today's marketplace!

But I have to tell you, I miss my boys! I can't wait to see them tomorrow night.

Good vs WOW!

Good vs WOW!

How many times do you settle for just being good when you are capable of WOW?

We see so many examples of company's and leaders who are settling for good when they can do much better and they can achieve WOW! stuff. We see this much more today when times are more difficult....way too much settling for just being good in today's marketplace. Here is what is looks like:
  • Just good marketing
  • Just good employee relations
  • Just good customer experience
  • Just good products
  • Just good innovation and creativity
  • Just good production and work product
  • Just good communication
  • Just good leadership
  • Just good team work

Just good but not WOW!

Don't let good rob you from WOW! Make sure you and your organization are not settling for being just good when you are capable and can reach for WOW!

Homework: Intentionally analyze every part of your business and ask yourself if you achieved the WOW standard. If not, what can you break and change to get to WOW? Then make a plan to hit the WOW standard in every part of your business....especially focus on the Basics. The great companies execute the Basics with a WOW standard every single time!

  • Setting goals to achieve the vision
  • Great Time Management...don't ever waste time
  • Evolve or Erode..If it ain't broke = BREAK IT....change today
  • Master the Basics...The secret sauce in business is that is NO SECRETS! Do the basics every single day better than your competition
  • Attitude is everything
  • And finally how about this: Sell something to somebody today! Just go out and sell something today...what would the marketplace and economy look like if we all just did this?
We all need to get going...

We all need to make it happen....

We all need to get busy gettin' busy!

How to get paid more money...

A question came in from this website on how to get paid more money. The big thing to grasp is this: You get paid for providing value to the marketplace.

High Value to the marketplace = High Pay
Low Value to the marketplace = Low Pay

The bank teller doesn't get paid as much as the bank president. Same bank and same employer writing the checks. Why does one get paid more than the other? The value brought to the marketplace!

To get paid more, you need to provide more value to the marketplace. Simple as that. Ask yourself this: What value am I bringing to the table? If there is not much there, then you need a plan to bring more value.

How can I do that?
  • Training
  • Learning more
  • Working on yourself (bring better attitude, better team player)
  • Marketing
  • Take on more work

The second issue is this: Are you effectively marketing yourself to maximise value and pay? The people that get paid well are awesome at marketing themselves to "highlight/sell" all that they bring in value.

Finally understand this: If there is nothing special about your work, there will be nothing special about your pay either! Be interesting and entertaining in your work, bring huge value, market yourself as special, and watch the chips start to add up!

Street Retreat Follow Up

Mobile Loaves and Fishes Street Retreat 2009 was certainly amazing if not life changing for me. A group of 20 or so of us literally were homeless for a weekend. We were dropped off in downtown Austin at 5 pm on Friday and had to live and survive until Sunday; with no food, no money, no credit cards, no phone...nothing but our clothes on our back or backpack. I ate in the shelters and slept on the blacktop of a bare parking lot. But most of all, I met some incredible new friends! (both the homeless as well as the fellow participants)

I have had several emails on wanting to know how the Street Retreat went last weekend and what take away was from the experience. I apologize for the delay but it took me a couple days to de-compress and gather my thoughts. So here they are:
  • Little things make a huge difference so just take small actions...a simple bottle of water changes the entire day for a homeless person. Because the homeless issue is so big and so complex, I know many people that don't know what to do... so they don't do anything. But I want you to know that the small things really matter!
  • Giving Time is Huge! Many of the homeless friends I met, simply wanted to talk. Look... every single one of us want to matter in the is world. We all want to contribute in some fashion. The homeless are the same. They want to matter. But, due to many factors like absence of any family or addiction, nobody has listened to the homeless. I think mountains can be moved if we simply just listen and give some time to the homeless.
  • Everyone has a story...we just need to take some time and care about "their" story.
  • Sleep deprivation is a huge issue. I have been asked so many times: Why don't they just go get a job? Well, it's not that simple. One of the big issues is that the homeless are tired. They experience massive sleep deprivation. With 2 nights....only 2 nights, I was exhausted! I got about 4 total hours of sleep. Imagine never having a good nights sleep...well that is reality for a homeless person. Try this: For 1 night, just sleep outside in your backyard and tell me how you slept. And that's only about 5% of a homeless persons night.
  • Love em Up! Love is the strongest four letter word ever created. We simply need to intentionally love em up!
  • Hope! We need to provide hope to the homeless. Hope in life getting better. Hope in brighter days are ahead. Hope in a job. Hope in a having their own place. Hope in providing for themselves. Hope in their Faith!
  • God is present! One of my biggest take aways is the strong presence of God in the homeless. These people, despite incredibly bad living circumstances, have strong faith and a powerful belief in Jesus! Incredible. If you live in Austin and you want to see mountain moving faith, go to Church Under the Bridge (at 7th and I-35)
  • Action Action we need Action! You can make a huge difference today. But it takes action. Since this is a complex issue, I suggest teaming up with experts like Mobile Loaves and Fishes. They flat out GET IT! Give money, give time, and give your resources to MLF...I promise it will be put to great use to solve this problem.

Street Retreat 2009 Introduction

Homeless starting today

Starting at 5pm, I will be homeless. For the next 48 hours, I am participating in a retreat but not the kind of retreat you are thinking about. A retreat to the streets of Austin. With Mobile Loaves and Fishes (MLF at www.mlfnow.org)

I will have no food, no water, no wallet, no phone, and no money. But I will have and make new RELATIONSHIPS! As we talk about all the time in our speeches and seminars, we all need to get uncomfortable in life...comfortably uncomfortable. We all need to get out of our ruts and routines to get from "Here" to "There". We can't get to "There" by doing the same things that got us to "Here".

I can't wait for this journey and experience. Follow this and we will update often on this experience. I will be back Sunday night. See MLF thoughts below:

The only cost for this experience is your time. All are welcome. If now is the
time for you realign your priorities around what is really important, and you
feel the call to step out of your comfort zone and experience Christ in a deeply
moving and powerful way, Street Retreat might be for you. Leave your
phone, PDA, wallet, and appointment calendar, and step into a
world of the least of our brothers and sisters...the real world.

“He commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a staff only: no bread, no wallet, no money in their purse…” Mark 6:8

Question submitted

Chris, How can I get more customers?

Consistently the best way to get new customers is through networking. But why don’t more people actually do networking? We find the answer is because it takes time and consistent effort. In today’s world, we all are trained to want instant results and immediate. Lose 15 pounds in 15 minutes; Grow hair in a weekend; 5 minute meals…are some examples of our instant results world. Just think about it, when someone goes through the “express lane” at the grocery store with over the 15 item limit, we are mad and rolling our eyes! (oh, don’t pretend you don’t do that!)

Networking is by far the best way to get new customers. And the best thing about networking is that when done properly, you can create awesome relationships that can turn into great sources of referrals, repeats, and customers for life. How do I network? Many people make networking way to hard. Start with your circle of influences and make sure you remind them who you are and exactly what you do. That’s as hard as you need to make it.

Let’s define your circle of influence. We define your circle of influence as anybody who knows your name! That is considerably larger than most people’s definition. When we ask the marketplace to define the circle of influence, we tend to get answers like neighbors, co-workers, spouse’s co-workers, friends and family. Something like that. But in reality, the circle is so much bigger than that. When you network think about your circle of influence as more like this:

· Friends
· Family
· Neighborhood
· Vendors you do business with (if you write a check to a vendor, they should be helping your business!)
· Co-workers
· Spouses contacts and circle of influence for spouse
· Spouses co-workers and employment
· The school family where your kids go to school
· Former employers and former co-workers
· Businesses by your office
· Any groups that you belong to (civic groups, chambers, church groups)
· Your associations
· Clients
· Referrals
· Former clients
· Your clients network base

As you can see, you can never run out of networking opportunities. In addition to the above list, in our own business, we network by meeting new people every single day. Think about and ask yourself this: What would my business look like if I just met one new person every single day? For most of us, the answer is obviously that our business would substantially improve. Networking this the best way to grow your business for success in the long-term.

Question submitted

Chris: What can I do to remain positive and upbeat with today’s marketplace?

The first thing to do is shut off the TV and media. Statistics tell us the negative sells in the media. How many times do you turn on the TV and the lead story is about something so positive and motivational? Never! The TV and media is all about creating drama and going negative….because that is what sells. With the average person having the TV on about 8 hours per day, it’s no wonder the world feels a bit negative!

We know so many people today who are consumed with the marketplace news and that is affecting their attitude in a huge negative way. (one person we know watches marketplace news some 12 hours a day....and he feels full of junk and funk....no wonder!) Just think about this: What positive news can come from the being consumed with the economy, or the stimulus package, or the stock market, or credit issues? NONE! And besides that, how many of us can actually control any of those things? NONE! So given that, how much sense does it make to put attention, time and focus on any of that stuff? NONE!

We want you to look objectively at your R & R….your ruts and routines. In real life, what are you doing on a daily basis? Those ruts and routines will determine your attitude to a hard degree. If your routines are full of negativity, guess what your attitude will be? Yes you got it; negative. There is no way around that. But also the flip side is fortunately true as well. If your routines are full of positive influences, guess what your attitude will be? Yes POSITIVE. To remain upbeat in today’s marketplace, you have to INTENTIONALLY work on your attitude.

Fill your life with positive surroundings and your attitude will be positive. Be surrounded and consumed with:

· Positive People
· Positive Routines
· Positive Thoughts
· Positive Behavior
· Positive Coaches, Support Group
· Positive Quiet Time for just you to work on you
· Positive Action and Execution of your plan

Be intentional about your attitude and remain positive....I got an idea for us to be positive: how about this....let's go out and just sell something to somebody today!

Feel free to send me an email on a question you have and I will be sure to answer it.

Bottle of Patience

Does anyone else need a bottle of patience?

As we talk to business leaders across the country, we are finding that patience is in short supply. In these times of chaos and uncertainty, the pressure is absolutely increasing and with that, patience is decreasing. Point blank, some are in a panic with no patience whatsoever.

I get it. But I also get, that is not the answer. Our business issues did not happen overnight and can not be fixed overnight. It just takes some time and takes some patience. We all need to do a business, professional, and personal TIME OUT! Let's take a time out to step back and take a deep breath. Just relax for a second. And then:
  • Focus on Attitude
  • Develop a plan
  • Measure and track (what you don't measure you can't manage)
  • Daily Focus
  • Do the Basics (work the phones)
  • Sell something to somebody (every single day or working on those efforts)....how about that for an idea?
  • Monitor cash flow

And Practice some Patience. Better days are clearly ahead. Hang on because they are coming!

5 Quickies for Leadership

5 Quick Hits for Leadership (quick but a ton a depth behind each of these)
  1. Leaders have a crystal clear vision and can clearly communicate this vision
  2. Leaders love relationships! (employees treated like customers)
  3. Leaders seek objectiveness (look for contrary opinions)
  4. Leaders inspire others to dream and think big....seek other's ideas and opinions
  5. Leaders serve....quick to listen and slow to talk

Take some time and intentionally digest each of these and work on growth plans for each.

To NOT Do List

In Charlotte NC today where I am doing three speeches over the next couple days. Since we travel a bit, we tend to get a front row seat to the not so good in customer service....mainly airlines.

But we can learn from this. In today's business, we all need a To-Do List and most of us have those. But equally, if not more important, is a To-NOT DO List.

Do you have a To-NOT Do List? If no, make one.

What don't you want to do in your customer experience? Make a list and make it intentional.

For the airlines, I am going to help them out (and may give you some thoughts as well for your business)

Do Not Do:
  • Ignore customers when they ask questions
  • Ever lie to customers
  • Talk when customers are talking (Listen first)
  • Blame others when problems happen
  • Make excuses that are false and don't make sense (our vendor ran out of coffee...in all of Dallas there is no coffee?)
  • Delay and loaf around
  • Look at your computers when customer wants face to face communication
  • Talk on the phone in front of a customer

In your business, what do you never want your customers to experience? Make a list and train every single person in the organization on it.
